ICPC Inducts NYSC ACTU Members, Demands Objectivity

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has inaugurated the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the National Youth Service Corps.

The commission charged the 11 newly inducted members to act with diligence, objectivity and the highest ethical standards.

ICPC Chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, gave the charge during the inauguration and induction ceremony at the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja.

Aliyu, represented by Mr Olusegun Adigun, described the inauguration as a major step towards strengthening internal accountability within the NYSC.

He said the unit would promote ethical conduct and help institutionalise anti-corruption practices across the organisation.

The chairman explained that ACTU serves as a complementary structure that works with management without competing with it or interfering in administrative functions.

He said the establishment of ACTUs across ministries, departments and agencies formed part of broader efforts to strengthen the government’s internal anti-corruption framework.

Aliyu also commended the NYSC for its contributions to national integration, discipline, patriotism and leadership development among Nigerian youths.

“The scale of NYSC operations makes transparency, accountability and strong internal controls essential to maintaining public confidence and safeguarding public resources,” he said.

He added that the new unit must contribute to the Scheme’s integrity framework and support the implementation of effective anti-corruption measures.

The ICPC chairman urged the members to organise sensitisation and training programmes for NYSC staff.

He said such programmes would deepen awareness of corruption risks and encourage ethical conduct across the organisation.

Aliyu also listed monitoring of budget implementation and relevant operational activities among the responsibilities of the unit.

He called on NYSC management to give the ACTU the support it needs to perform its duties effectively and in line with government guidelines.

According to him, adequate institutional support would strengthen the unit and further boost public confidence in the NYSC.

The chairman urged the 11 members to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in handling their responsibilities.

He stressed that their conduct would influence public perception of the anti-corruption mechanism within the Scheme.

Speaking at the ceremony, NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to accountability, integrity and zero tolerance for corruption.

Nafiu, represented by the Director, Legal Services, Barrister Chris Ogar, described the fight against corruption as a collective responsibility.

He commended ACTU for raising awareness about ethical conduct and identifying areas within the organisation that could expose it to corrupt practices.

“As you assume this responsibility, I urge you to discharge your duties with integrity, courage, impartiality and strict adherence to extant rules and regulations,” the director general said.

Nafiu also urged the members to lead by example and uphold the values they would promote among other staff.

He challenged them to take preventive action against practices that could weaken the Scheme’s systems and processes.

“Be proactive in promoting compliance and blocking loopholes that will encourage unethical practices,” he added.

The inauguration marks another step in efforts to strengthen internal accountability within the NYSC and make anti-corruption measures part of its institutional processes.
