The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old driver, Ayoade Idowu, for allegedly crushing a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) official to death during a traffic check in Akure, the state capital.
The incident occurred at about 9.30 a.m. on Friday along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, when the deceased, identified as 35-year-old Sesan Adediji, was on routine patrol with other VIO officials.
Adediji reportedly flagged down a white Mitsubishi van, with registration number AGL 992 XX, to inspect its documents. However, the driver allegedly hit him after initially stopping for the inspection.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, Abayomi Jimoh, said preliminary information indicated that Idowu drove off when the official requested the vehicle documents.
“The victim sustained serious head injuries and was immediately rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where he was subsequently confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” Jimoh said.
He added that the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The police spokesman confirmed that operatives had arrested and detained the driver as investigations continued.
According to him, police officers had visited the scene to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Jimoh also disclosed that the case file would be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.
Idowu, who resides on Gbogi Street in Akure, has yet to face any publicly reported charge in connection with the incident.
The police have not announced further details of the investigation.
