The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) have begun coordinating alternative power supply arrangements for work on a major transmission line in Kano State.

The plan involves the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV Transmission Line, where contractors will elongate Towers 27 and 28. Stakeholders discussed the proposed outage and load diversion at a meeting in Kano on Monday, October 5, 2026.

The meeting brought together the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), KEDCO, project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works. General Manager, Transmission, Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, chaired the meeting at the TCN regional conference room.

Bello expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but urged them to examine the technical arrangements carefully before work begins.

He stressed the need to assess all proposed connections and switching procedures to protect personnel and equipment and maintain network reliability.

NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, called for strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement to submit planned outage applications at least 14 days before the proposed date for approval.

He emphasised that proper regulatory and operational procedures would help stakeholders coordinate the exercise safely.

Meanwhile, KEDCO’s Head of Operations and Maintenance, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting the load served by Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to other substations during the proposed two-day outage.

The alternative supply points under consideration include Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV substations.

Participants assessed the capacity of the network to accommodate the diverted load and reviewed possible supply arrangements. They found that Hadejia 132kV Substation could not absorb the entire 60-megawatt load earmarked for diversion.

The meeting consequently considered supply options involving Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations to determine suitable arrangements for the planned work.

Stakeholders also highlighted the need to prevent operational risks and ensure that the alternative supply configuration would not compromise network stability.

At the end of the meeting, the participating agencies and contractors pledged to strengthen inter-agency coordination, comply with regulatory requirements and facilitate the timely completion of the project.

The proposed arrangements are intended to support the tower elongation work while managing the associated load diversion safely. However, the meeting report did not confirm the final outage date or whether the proposed two-day window had received approval.
