JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

In a heartfelt response to a tragic incident in the Republic of Guinea, the Federal Republic of Nigeria has officially expressed its condolences after a stampede at a football match in the city of N’Zerekore resulted in the loss of 56 lives.

The stampede, reportedly triggered by protests against refereeing decisions, escalated quickly as stone-throwing ensued among supporters, leading to chaos and fatalities.

Natural Periscope gathered that the shocking event has left the nation in mourning, with many expressing their grief for the victims and their families.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria conveyed its deep sorrow, stating, “The Federal Republic of Nigeria expresses its sincere condolences to the government and people of Guinea following the tragic loss of life in the recent stampede during a football match in the city of N’Zerekore which caused the death of 56 persons.”

Ebienfa emphasized the need for solidarity in the wake of such tragedies, adding, “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this dreadful event.”

Earlier, Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah attributed the tragedy to a stampede and urged for calm.

A doctor, speaking anonymously, mentioned that numerous bodies were “lined up” in the hospital, which was overwhelmed with casualties.

Reports indicate that police resorted to tear gas after Labé supporters, angered by a referee’s decision, began throwing stones onto the pitch.
