APC Adopts Indirect Primary for Anambra Gubernatorial Race
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

In preparation for the Anambra State governorship election set for November 8, 2025, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially adopted the indirect primary method to determine its candidate.
At a press conference following the NWC meeting at the party’s national headquarters, the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Bashiru announced this decision yesterday.
The NWC clarified that previous announcements hinting at a direct primary were incorrect, as no official decision had been reached before the meeting.
Bashiru stated that the choice of an indirect primary was thoroughly deliberated to ensure a more inclusive and organized approach.
“At the NWC today, it was formally decided that the mode of emergence of the candidate for the Anambra governorship election will be through indirect primary,” Bashiru remarked.
“This decision was made to carry along all stakeholders and ensure a transparent process.”
To reinforce this decision, the APC has planned a stakeholders’ meeting for 1 PM next Tuesday at the party’s national headquarters. This session will include members of the Anambra State Working Committee, the state caucus, and all candidates seeking the party’s nomination.
The gathering will allow the NWC to inform stakeholders about the decision and address any questions prior to the primary election.
Bashiru also indicated that the party would duly inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in accordance with electoral regulations. Additionally, supplementary announcements and public awareness campaigns will be launched to update party members and the general public about the primary process and the revised timeline.
The Anambra governorship election is a crucial contest for the APC, which aims to enhance its presence in the Southeast region. The selection of indirect primaries is viewed as a strategic approach to promote unity among party members and ensure that all voices are heard in decision-making.
The NWC’s decision comes as the party continues its efforts to revise its constitution and enhance inclusivity in its operations.
Bashiru affirmed the party’s dedication to establishing an integrity-driven register before the next election and emphasized that the ongoing e-registration of party members is a step toward achieving that goal.
Other NWC members in attendance at the briefing included Tolu Bankole, APC National Leader for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs); Dayo Israel, Youth Leader; as well as the National Financial Secretary, Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, and Zainab Ibrahim, Deputy National Women Leader.
