NiMet Seeks Dialogue with Labour Unions over Fresh Strike Threat
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

In a bid to foster understanding and maintain peace within the aviation sector, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has extended an invitation to three key labour unions: the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE), the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP).
This invitation aims to address ongoing concerns and avert any potential disruptions in industrial harmony.
NiMet’s call for dialogue came as a response to the unions’ recent announcement of a planned industrial action, which they communicated in a letter dated April 10, 2025.
In the correspondence, the unions expressed their frustration over NiMet’s alleged failure to implement crucial aspects of the agreement reached on January 28, 2025.
However, NiMet has pushed back against these claims. The agency’s Director of Human Resource Management & Administration, Dr. Nasiru Sani, characterized the unions’ accusations as “unfair” and “demeaning.” He emphasized that while the unions’ concerns are acknowledged, many of the issues at hand require collaboration with other government agencies.
“NiMet has engaged relevant government agencies and is awaiting responses or approvals on several matters,” Sani explained.
He further expressed disappointment regarding the unions’ skepticism about the integrity of the negotiated Conditions of Service, asserting that NiMet has not only forwarded the necessary documents to the ministry but has also enhanced the terms by including additional allowances.
Regarding the contentious 25–35 percent wage award, the balance of the 2019 minimum wage, and the exclusion of 30 staff members from that payment, Sani confirmed that all required approvals have been secured. However, he noted that the release of funds is beyond NiMet’s control.
In addressing the salary relativity dispute, Sani pointed out that the unions’ reference to a directive for adopting the Nigerian Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) salary structure lacks any verifiable documentation.
