Nigeria Strengthens Global Partnership in Renewable Energy—Tuggar

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has outlined the country’s strategy to deepen engagement with global partners in renewable energy as part of efforts to reduce its reliance on hydrocarbon revenues.

The Minister disclosed this on Thursday, in his keynote address at the inaugural session of Agora Policy Forum, in Abuja.

NATIONAL PERICOPE gathered that Agora Policy is a Nigerian think tank and non-profit committed to finding practical solutions to urgent national challenges.

Tuggar’s remarks came at a critical juncture marked by global uncertainty and shifting economic view.

Opening the forum, the Minister emphasized the importance of dialogue in navigating the complexities of today’s international order. He noted the need for Nigeria to adapt with “foresight, pragmatism, and resilience.”

“We are gathered here at a time when the international order is undergoing significant transformation,” Tuggar stated.

The Minister highlighted the fracturing of the post-Cold War consensus, which has led to increased geopolitical tensions and economic volatility.

He pointed to the war in Ukraine and its repercussions on energy markets, as well as ongoing conflicts in Sudan and the Sahel, which have challenged traditional diplomatic frameworks.

“The global economy is experiencing persistent inflationary pressures and a reconfiguration of trade partnerships,” Tuggar noted.

To address these challenges, Tuggar outlined four strategic pillars guiding Nigeria’s foreign policy: strategic autonomy in a multipolar world, economic diplomacy and sustainable development, security and regional stability, and a commitment to multilateralism.

He stressed the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy, stating, “To reduce overreliance on hydrocarbon revenues, we are deepening engagement with global partners in renewable energy, technology transfer, and industrialization.”

Tuggar also addressed Nigeria’s role in regional security, highlighting the country’s leadership in initiatives through ECOWAS and the Multinational Joint Task Force to combat terrorism and promote stability. “The world needs a militarily strong Nigeria to keep our region and the African continent safe,” he asserted.

Tuggar therefore called for collective action among all stakeholders, urging diplomats, academics, and business leaders to contribute to strengthening Nigeria’s global standing.

“With strategic foresight and national unity, we will position Nigeria as a formidable force in the evolving international system,” he concluded.
