ICPC Hails Media as Strategic Partner in Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption War

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has described the media as an indispensable ally in Nigeria’s fight against corruption, reaffirming its commitment to deepening collaboration with journalists and news organisations nationwide.

The commendation was delivered in a goodwill message presented on behalf of the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, at the 2025 Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, held recently in Abuja.

The Chairman was represented by ICPC Spokesperson and Head of Media and Public Communications, John Okor Odey.

According to Dr. Aliyu, the ICPC under his leadership has continued to prioritise engagement with media professionals, recognising that credible journalism plays a crucial role in exposing corrupt practices, promoting ethical conduct, and advancing transparency in public service. He noted that the media remains a central pillar in Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and a key driver of public enlightenment and accountability.

The conference, which drew prominent national figures, had the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, GCON, as Chairman of the occasion. Shettima described the media as the backbone of democratic stability and emphasised that one of its most sacred responsibilities is safeguarding democracy.

He called for stronger collaboration among government institutions, the media, and civil society to protect national unity and strengthen democratic governance.

Also speaking, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, said the conference theme was timely, stressing the need for responsible journalism, constructive engagement, and consistent dialogue between the government and the media to boost public trust and social cohesion.

Earlier, the President of IPI Nigeria, Musikilu Mojeed, expressed concern over the growing challenges facing the Nigerian media industry. He underscored the urgent need to improve journalist safety and welfare, noting that reporters must be protected from harm while performing their constitutional duties.

Other goodwill messages included remarks from a representative of the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Dr. Bolatito Olufe, who commended IPI Nigeria for its commitment to press freedom. She urged journalists to uphold objectivity, professionalism, and national interest in their work.

The ICPC reiterated its readiness to sustain and expand its partnership with the media as part of efforts to strengthen the anti-corruption campaign and promote integrity across the country.
