FRSC Hails Army, Police Over Benin Toll Gate Attack, Orders Immediate Probe
JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has commended the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force for their swift intervention following a mob attack on the RS5.12 Benin Toll Gate Unit Command Office along the Benin–Lagos Expressway.
The incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, 2026, after a crash scene rescue operation around the Benin Toll Gate axis, where two trucks reportedly collided. The accident led to the death of one of the truck drivers and left some FRSC personnel critically injured.
In a statement signed on Friday by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps Headquarters, Abuja, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal expressed profound appreciation to the security agencies for their prompt and decisive response.

According to the statement, one of the injured FRSC officers later died despite receiving urgent medical attention.
Following the crash, an angry mob reportedly stormed and vandalised the Unit Command formation. However, the timely intervention of the Army and the Police helped restore calm and prevented further escalation of the situation.
The Corps Marshal condemned the attack on FRSC personnel and facilities, describing it as deeply regrettable and unacceptable. He emphasised that the operatives were on lawful duty to save lives when the tragic incident occurred.
While commiserating with the families of the deceased truck driver and the fallen officer, as well as the entire FRSC workforce, Mohammed ordered a comprehensive investigation into both the immediate and remote causes of the crash and the circumstances surrounding the mob action.
He assured the public that anyone found culpable would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to its mandate of ensuring safer roads across the country and urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding and supportive of FRSC operations.
