JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps has strengthened its collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission as part of efforts to improve national security and road safety through better data integration.

The renewed partnership followed a high-level meeting between the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, and the Director General of NIMC, Engr. Adesoye Coker. The meeting focused on harmonising identity data across government agencies to improve traceability, enhance law enforcement and support national planning.

Speaking during the engagement, the Corps Marshal stressed the importance of credible identity management in building a safer country.

He said, “robust data harmonisation among government institutions to build a secure and intelligent nation; where individuals can be properly identified for who they truly are.”

Mohammed commended NIMC for expanding Nigeria’s identity database and strengthening the National Identification Number system. He noted that effective identity management remains central to crash reduction strategies and law enforcement.

He also reaffirmed the Corps’ decision to enforce the use of the National Identification Number for vehicle registration and the issuance of the National Driver’s Licence.

He described the move as “a critical step toward sanitising the motoring space and enhancing traceability within the road transport sector.”

The Corps Marshal further requested that FRSC be included in NIMC’s Annual Identity Forum, noting that the agency plays a frontline role in identity management through its driver licensing and vehicle registration processes.

He explained that closer institutional collaboration would accelerate innovation, improve data accuracy and enhance operational efficiency.

In her remarks, the NIMC Director General pledged continued support for the partnership. She expressed appreciation for what she described as the transformation and modernisation taking place in FRSC.

The Director General said the Commission remains committed to partnering with FRSC in data integration initiatives that support crash reduction and national security objectives.

The meeting marks another step in the Federal Government’s plan to build a harmonised and technology-driven identity system aimed at strengthening governance, promoting accountability and safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads.
