CSOs to Protest over High Court CJ’s ‘Undeclared Assets’

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court,
Justice John Terhemba Tsoho

Civil society groups nationwide have announced plans to hold a mass rally on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, calling for the removal of Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

The move follows allegations that the judge failed to declare multiple bank accounts and breached Nigeria’s Code of Conduct laws while in office.

The coalition of civic organisations, citing investigative reports released today, claims Justice Tsoho’s actions have “brought the judiciary into disrepute” and undermine public confidence in the rule of law.

Documents reviewed by the coalition suggest that when Justice Tsoho submitted his asset declaration to the Code of Conduct Bureau on April 29, 2024, several naira and domiciliary accounts held with major banks were not disclosed.

The omission is alleged to contravene Section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, which requires full transparency from public officials regarding their financial holdings.

In a joint statement, Rashid Olakunle, National Spokesman for the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations Against Corruption and Injustice (COCSOACI), said the alleged conduct mirrors past judicial misconduct cases, including the removal of a former Chief Justice for similar breaches.

“The judiciary must be beyond reproach. When those entrusted with upholding the law are accused of willful violations of statutory provisions on transparency and accountability, there must be consequences,” one of the coalition conveners said.

They emphasised that ongoing investigations by anti-corruption agencies are insufficient and urged swift action to preserve trust in the justice system.

The planned rally is expected to bring together civil society groups, human rights advocates, lawyers, youth organisations, and concerned citizens. Organisers are calling on the President of Nigeria and the National Judicial Council to act promptly to suspend and remove Justice Tsoho.

“We cannot allow the sanctity of our laws to be eroded by those sworn to uphold them,” the coalition added, urging peaceful yet firm participation at the Abuja venue.

Preparations for the event are underway, with organisers promising to release detailed logistics and security arrangements in the coming days.

Nigerians have been encouraged to join the demonstration in large numbers to reinforce the principle that no one, regardless of office, is above the law.
