Lagos DSVA Reveals Why it May be Difficult to Prosecute Simi

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has said pursuing criminal charges over allegations linked to popular singer Simi would be challenging without a survivor willing to formally lodge a complaint.
Speaking during an appearance on Morning Brief on Channels Television, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, explained that while authorities cannot ignore public allegations, the justice process requires direct testimony from an affected individual before prosecution can proceed.
She noted that the agency had taken note of the reports circulating online and acknowledged its responsibility to initiate preliminary steps.
“As for the Simi case, we cannot pretend that we have not seen these reports. We have a duty to at least begin a preliminary investigation,” she said.
However, Vivour-Adeniyi stressed that the absence of a complainant presents a major legal hurdle.
“The truth is that it will be very difficult to prosecute without a survivor being present,” she added, urging anyone who may have been affected to come forward to give an official statement.
The agency confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation, as part of efforts to determine the next line of action.
Vivour-Adeniyi reiterated that allegations of abuse or misconduct must be treated seriously, but emphasized that due process and the rule of law require concrete evidence and formal complaints before charges can be filed.
She encouraged survivors of domestic or sexual violence to speak up, assuring that mechanisms are in place to protect their identities and ensure proper support throughout the legal process.
