Exiled Crown Prince Pahlavi Signals Readiness to Lead Iran

Exiled Iranian crown prince Reza Pahlavi has declared his readiness to lead Iran, saying he has accepted what he described as a call by many Iranians to guide the country through a political transition following the reported death of the country’s supreme leader.
Pahlavi, the eldest son of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran’s last monarch before the 1979 revolution, made the declaration in a video statement shared on his social media platform.
He said many Iranians had urged him to assume a leadership role in the event of a change in government, adding that he was prepared to help steer the country toward stability and democratic governance.
“The Iranian people have called on me to lead the transition after the regime is gone,” he said in the video. “I have accepted that responsibility.”
Pahlavi has long been one of the most prominent opposition figures challenging the rule of the Islamic Republic and has repeatedly called for mass protests aimed at replacing the current political system in Iran.
He has also advocated closer diplomatic ties between Iran and Western nations, as well as improved relations with Israel.
The development follows the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was said to have died on Saturday during strikes carried out by forces linked to the United States and Israel.
Under Iran’s constitutional framework, the responsibility of appointing a new supreme leader rests with the Assembly of Experts, a clerical body tasked with selecting the country’s highest authority.
Pending the selection of a successor, a temporary governing arrangement has reportedly been put in place involving a three-member transitional council made up of the country’s president, the head of the judiciary and a representative of the Guardian Council.
In his statement, Pahlavi criticised the Islamic Republic, accusing it of fueling instability across the Middle East for decades.
“For nearly five decades, this regime has sown chaos and bloodshed across our region,” he said.
He added that his priority would be to oversee an orderly transition, restore stability and allow citizens to determine the country’s future through democratic elections.
“My commitment is to ensure the transition is orderly, the country is stabilized, and Iranians determine their future through the ballot box,” he stated.
Pahlavi also called on governments across the Arab world to prepare to engage with what he described as a potential transitional government should the current system collapse.
However, the Assembly of Experts has yet to formally announce a successor to Khamenei. The position of supreme leader remains the most powerful office in Iran’s political structure, holding ultimate authority over the country’s military, judiciary and major state policies.
