FIFA Sanctions Nigeria, DR Congo Over World Cup Qualifier Incidents

The world football governing body, FIFA, has imposed sanctions on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Congolese Football Association following disciplinary breaches recorded during a qualifying fixture for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to FIFA’s latest disciplinary overview covering World Cup qualifying matches, the two football bodies were penalised over separate incidents that occurred during their encounter on November 16, 2025.
FIFA said Nigeria was sanctioned after spectators threw objects during the match, an act considered a violation of match order and security regulations.
The offence, which contravenes provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, attracted a fine of 1,000 Swiss francs against the NFF.
The Congolese federation, however, received a stiffer penalty after its supporters were found to have used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the same game.
The act breached Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary code, prompting FIFA to impose a fine of 5,000 Swiss francs on the DR Congo football body.
FIFA explained that disciplinary measures are determined based on the specific circumstances of each case and noted that such decisions may still be challenged through the appeal process.
The governing body added that while summaries of sanctions are released publicly for media information, official legal decisions are communicated directly to the concerned federations.
The Nigeria–DR Congo encounter has remained a major talking point since the dramatic end to Nigeria’s qualification hopes.
The Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, saw their chances of advancing further in the qualifying series fade last November after losing to the DR Congo national football team on penalties in the final round of the African qualifying play-offs.
Following the defeat, the NFF submitted a formal petition to FIFA questioning the eligibility of several DR Congo players.
The Nigerian federation argued that DR Congo’s domestic legislation does not recognise dual citizenship for adults, raising concerns about players allegedly holding European passports while representing the Leopards.
NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi earlier explained the basis of the complaint.
“As far as FIFA is concerned, once you have the passport of your country, you are eligible. But our concern is that FIFA may have been deceived into clearing them,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Sports Commission of Nigeria, Shehu Dikko, has cautioned against interpreting recent developments as a final ruling on Nigeria’s protest.
He noted that the inclusion of DR Congo among teams preparing for the intercontinental play-off tournament does not necessarily mean FIFA has dismissed Nigeria’s petition.
“As far as we know, FIFA is yet to give its verdict,” Dikko said.
“The fact that DR Congo appears among the six nations to compete for the final two spots in the playoff is not enough to conclude that FIFA has thrown out Nigeria’s petition. We are monitoring the situation closely.”
He expressed optimism that Nigeria could still prevail in the eligibility dispute.
“We are hopeful that Nigeria will win the case and the Super Eagles will proceed to the playoff and possibly make the World Cup party. Nigerians should remain calm and wait for the final verdict,” he added.
DR Congo remains listed among teams preparing for the intercontinental play-off tournament as the race for the final slots at the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies.
