FRSC Confirms 10 Dead in Niger Crash, Warns Against Speeding

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in a fatal road crash along the Tafa axis of Niger State, renewing its warning against speeding and the dangerous practice of mixed loading.

The crash, which occurred on Monday morning at about 8:20 a.m. along the Tafa–Gujeni route near Malam Tanko, involved a DAF tanker carrying 33 male occupants.

According to a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, preliminary findings showed that 10 persons died in the accident, while 20 others sustained various degrees of injuries. Three occupants were rescued without injuries.

The FRSC condemned the illegal act of transporting passengers alongside goods.

“Available evidence indicates that the crash was caused by excessive speed, which led to loss of control,” the statement said, adding that the vehicle was engaged in “the highly dangerous and illegal act of mixed loading.”

FRSC officials responded swiftly to the scene, rescuing 23 victims and clearing the road to restore traffic flow.

The injured were taken to Umar Musa General Hospital in Sabon Wuse for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the hospital mortuary.

Reacting to the incident, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the crash as avoidable and a painful reminder of the consequences of ignoring safety regulations.

“No journey is worth the loss of human lives,” he said, condemning what he called the continued disregard for road safety advisories by some drivers.

He added that the Corps would intensify enforcement and public awareness campaigns to curb speeding and eliminate mixed loading on Nigerian roads.

The FRSC urged drivers and transport operators to obey speed limits and avoid using inappropriate vehicles to carry passengers, stressing that road safety remains a shared responsibility.

The Corps Marshal also extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
