Over 100 Soldiers Feared Dead as Military Aircraft Crashes

Fears are mounting over a possible mass casualty incident in Colombia after a military transport aircraft carrying more than 100 soldiers crashed in a remote part of the country.

The aircraft, identified as a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, reportedly went down shortly after takeoff near Puerto Leguízamo in Putumayo province, a sparsely populated region close to the borders with Peru and Ecuador.

Authorities said emergency response teams have been dispatched to the crash site, as efforts intensify to locate survivors and determine the extent of casualties.

Colombia’s Defence Minister described the incident as “tragic,” noting that officials are still working to gather accurate information due to the difficult terrain and limited access to the area.

Initial reports suggest that about 110 soldiers were on board at the time of the crash, raising concerns of a significant loss of life. However, no official casualty figures had been confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

Images and videos shared on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the crash site, with military personnel and rescue workers seen moving quickly to the scene.

Investigations into the cause of the crash have commenced, with authorities expected to examine possible technical faults, weather conditions, and other operational factors.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft is widely used by military forces across the world for troop movement and logistics, making the incident particularly devastating given the number of personnel reportedly on board.

The crash has sent shockwaves across Colombia, with government officials expressing concern and extending sympathies to the families of those affected, while cautioning that the full scale of the tragedy may take time to establish.
