Kidnappers Demand N1bn Ransom for Abducted Kwara Worshippers

Gunmen who abducted worshippers during a church service in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State have demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release.
The victims, numbering eight, were kidnapped at an Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA) congregation in Omugo community during Sunday worship.
Confirming the development, the church’s Pastor-in-Charge, Toba Omole, said the attackers stormed the service, fired gunshots into the air to disperse worshippers, and whisked away the victims, including his wife.
He disclosed that the abductors later contacted the community and briefly allowed the captives to speak with their relatives before stating their demand.
“This morning, we were able to hear from those who were abducted. I heard my wife’s voice and those of other members,” Omole said. “About eight of them are still in captivity, and the kidnappers have demanded N1 billion for their release.”
The cleric appealed to the state government and well-meaning Nigerians for urgent intervention, noting that the ransom is beyond what the community can afford.
“This is far beyond what we can afford. We are appealing for help and intervention, including efforts toward negotiation to secure their release,” he added.
Omole acknowledged the initial response of security operatives, who visited the area shortly after the incident and provided temporary protection, but stressed the need for sustained deployment.
“We appreciate the security operatives who came around and stayed with us for some time to ensure calm in the community,” he said.
The abduction has heightened tension in the area, with residents expressing fears over the safety of the captives and calling on authorities to intensify efforts to secure their rescue.
