Police arrest suspect over $550,000 fraud, identity theft in Edo

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a suspect linked to a $550,000 fraud, identity theft and money laundering case involving a United States-based victim.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed this in a statement issued Tuesday in Abuja, noting that the arrest was carried out by operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) Abuja.

According to the police, the case was reported by an American woman who was allegedly defrauded of $550,000 between October 2025 and January 2026.

The statement said the suspect, identified as Emwanta Eghosa Smith, was apprehended in Benin City, Edo State, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation conducted between March 23 and 26, 2026.

Investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly posed as top government officials and other prominent personalities to gain the confidence of the victim before convincing her to transfer funds through cryptocurrency platforms.

Police said proceeds of the fraud were laundered through the purchase of five vehicles and an uncompleted building in Benin City, all of which have been recovered and secured as exhibits.

Operatives also recovered counterfeit cash valued at $10,000 from the suspect during the operation.

The statement noted that the arrest represents a major breakthrough in the fight against transnational cybercrime, adding that the operation aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to intensify efforts against cyber-enabled financial crimes.

The police boss reiterated the commitment of the force to strengthening collaboration with international partners, particularly through INTERPOL, to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice and victims protected.

The Force also urged members of the public to remain vigilant in their online dealings, especially those involving financial transactions, and to promptly report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies.
