Artemis II Crew Returns Safely After Historic Moon Mission

Four astronauts have safely returned to Earth after a daring journey around the Moon, marking a major milestone in humanity’s renewed push into deep space.
The crew of Artemis II splashed down off the coast of San Diego at exactly 8:07 p.m. Eastern Time (1:07 a.m in Nigeria), bringing to a close a 10-day mission that took them farther from Earth than any humans have ever travelled.

Aboard the Orion capsule were NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen.
Moments after landing, Wiseman confirmed the crew’s condition, saying, “What a journey. We are stable. Four green crewmembers,” signalling that all astronauts were in good health.
Recovery operations began immediately, with personnel from the United States Navy moving in to secure the capsule. The USS John P. Murtha, stationed nearby, was tasked with retrieving the astronauts and transporting them to its onboard medical facility for initial checks.
Divers were first to reach the Orion capsule, conducting safety inspections before flotation devices were deployed to stabilise the spacecraft in the ocean. A specially designed raft, known as the “front porch,” was then attached to assist the astronauts as they prepared to exit the capsule for airlift to the recovery ship.
Officials at NASA described the spacecraft’s return through Earth’s atmosphere as flawless. Nicky Fox, associate administrator for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate, said the reentry was “picture perfect,” likening the splashdown to “placing a cup of tea gently on a table.”
Despite the successful return, mission work is far from over. Scientists will now analyse a vast amount of data gathered during the flight, focusing on how deep-space radiation and microgravity affected the crew, as well as the performance of the Orion capsule during its historic lunar flyby.
Fox noted that the astronauts may already be looking ahead to future missions, even after their demanding journey. While there is relief at being back on Earth, she hinted at mixed emotions among the crew, revealing that Koch had expressed a desire to remain in space longer.
The Artemis II mission is widely seen as a critical step toward future crewed landings on the Moon, as space agencies prepare for more ambitious exploration beyond Earth’s orbit.
