Nigerian Woman’s Body Discovered in Septic Tank in Libya

A Nigerian woman has been found dead under troubling circumstances in Zawiya, a coastal city in Libya, raising fresh concerns about the safety of migrants in the North African nation.
Local reports monitored on Sunday indicated that the lifeless body of the woman was discovered inside an uncompleted concrete septic tank. The report, published by The Libya Observer, said the discovery was made in Zawiya, though details surrounding the incident remain unclear.
Authorities have yet to determine how the woman ended up in the septic tank, and there has been no official statement on whether foul play is suspected. Investigations are expected to shed more light on the circumstances leading to her death.
Zawiya, located west of Tripoli, has been identified in the past as a transit hub for migrants seeking passage to Europe, often under dangerous and unregulated conditions.
The incident comes months after another disturbing case involving Nigerian nationals in Libya. In January, a Nigerian woman and her Ghanaian husband were arrested in Tripoli over allegations of torturing and starving an orphaned child to death.
According to reports by The Libya Observer, the couple was taken into custody on January 7, 2025, following claims that they subjected the child to prolonged abuse, leading to fatal consequences.
Further details revealed that the child had been left in their care after the death of the mother, who reportedly died under suspicious circumstances in Libya about two years earlier.
The latest discovery has again drawn attention to the plight of African migrants in Libya, where many face harsh living conditions, abuse, and limited legal protections.
