Homes, Property Damaged as Flood Sweep Through Jalingo

Several homes and valuables were destroyed in Jalingo after a prolonged downpour triggered widespread flooding across parts of the city in the early hours of Saturday.

The heavy rainfall, which reportedly began around 3 a.m., lasted for several hours, causing water levels to rise rapidly and overflow into residential areas.

Communities along the Mile Six axis were among the worst affected, with floodwaters submerging buildings and leaving trails of debris in their wake.

Residents said the intensity of the rain left little room for preparation, as water quickly flooded homes and compounds. Around Excellence International School, the situation was particularly severe, with reports of damaged structures and displaced belongings.

Many residents expressed frustration over what they described as a recurring problem linked to poor drainage systems. According to them, blocked or inadequate channels have made the area vulnerable to flooding, even during less severe rainfall.

“We are tired of this happening every year,” said Nasiru Illiya, whose home was partially submerged. “The drainage systems here are either blocked or completely insufficient. Each time it rains heavily, we are at risk.”

Preliminary reports indicate that numerous households suffered losses, including damaged personal items, eroded access routes, and weakened buildings. In some instances, floodwaters reportedly swept away parts of fences and outdoor structures.

Beyond the physical damage, residents also raised concerns over possible health implications, warning that stagnant water left behind could lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases if not promptly addressed.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for urgent intervention by authorities. Residents are urging both local and state governments to prioritise the construction and maintenance of effective drainage systems, as well as implement sustainable flood control measures.

With the rainy season gathering pace across Taraba State, fears are growing that similar incidents could occur in other parts of the capital if proactive steps are not taken to protect lives and property.
