Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final with a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Wembley on Sunday, thanks to a first-half header from Enzo Fernández.
The win sends the Blues into a showdown with Manchester City in the final on May 16, offering a possible escape route from a troubled domestic campaign that has been defined by managerial instability and poor league form.
Fernández struck in the 23rd minute after Pedro Neto delivered a precise cross into the box, which the Argentine midfielder met with a firm header beyond the reach of Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
The goal came during a tense semi-final that saw Leeds threaten on a few occasions but fail to convert key chances, including a clear opening for Brenden Aaronson early in the first half.
Chelsea, who have struggled for consistency in recent weeks, entered the match under interim manager Calum McFarlane following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior earlier in the week after a run of five consecutive defeats without scoring.
Rosenior’s brief spell, which lasted just over three months, ended after a damaging loss to Brighton that deepened concerns about the squad’s direction and morale.
Fernández had himself been at the centre of internal tensions in the final weeks of Rosenior’s tenure after comments about his future reportedly unsettled the dressing room and led to him being temporarily dropped.
Despite that backdrop, Chelsea managed a more composed performance at Wembley, protecting their lead even as Leeds pushed forward in the second half.
Anton Stach came close to levelling shortly after the break with a powerful strike that forced a save, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin also missed a decent opportunity with a header that went straight at Robert Sánchez.
There were further moments of frustration for Leeds, particularly when Sánchez went down injured during the second half, triggering claims from some Leeds players that it was a tactical delay, adding to the tension on the touchline.
Leeds, appearing in their first FA Cup semi-final in decades, could not turn their spells of pressure into goals and exit the competition after a spirited but wasteful display.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will now turn their attention to Manchester City in what promises to be a difficult final, but one that offers a chance to salvage silverware from a turbulent season.
The Blues remain outside the Champions League qualification places in the Premier League, but their cup run has provided some relief amid a difficult run of form that has tested both players and staff.
For Leeds, it is a missed opportunity to reach their first FA Cup final in more than 50 years, despite a performance that showed flashes of promise at Wembley.
