A former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has downplayed the significance of Governor Abdullahi Sule’s endorsement of a preferred successor, insisting that the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will ultimately be decided by party members and the electorate.
Adamu, who is seeking the party’s ticket ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State, spoke in Abuja on Friday shortly after submitting his Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.
His comments come in the wake of Governor Sule’s public backing of Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor, a move that has stirred discussions within the state’s political circles.
Reacting to the development, Adamu said the governor’s position does not pose any threat to his ambition, noting that political preferences are a matter of individual choice.
“The governor is a human being, just like any other person, and he feels that Wadada is his preferred candidate, so he has the right to do that,” he said. “Just like you in Nasarawa State, you may not prefer Wadada; you may prefer somebody like me, it is also your choice. We don’t take offense at all.”
He stressed that his focus remains on engaging party members and residents of the state, appealing for their support as the contest unfolds. According to him, the forthcoming primary election will provide a level playing field for all aspirants.
Adamu also revealed that he has begun grassroots mobilisation across the state in preparation for the APC’s direct primary, expressing optimism about his chances.
“We have started the process of mobilising our supporters towards the primary election. We are fully aware that the primary election will be conducted through direct primaries,” he said. “We are teaming up with our supporters and will intensify sensitisation before the primaries. We are confident that free and fair primary elections will lead us to 2027.”
On his agenda, the former police chief identified security as the cornerstone of his proposed administration, arguing that development can only thrive in a safe and stable environment.
“Our first objective when we get there is security; to ensure that everybody is safe,” he said. “We need to provide physical security, human security, and all other aspects of security. Once we establish a strong foundation of security, it will be easier to achieve other developmental goals.”
He added that his plans also cover economic growth, as well as targeted initiatives for women and youths aimed at boosting inclusion and productivity in the state.
