Aisha Yesufu

Prominent activist and political figure, Aisha Yesufu, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announcing her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat.

Yesufu made the announcement on her official X account on Wednesday, saying her decision was driven by her continued political alignment with the leadership of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, whom she described as a symbol of “hope and aspiration for a Nigeria that works.”

“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation,” she wrote. “This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”

She explained that her move was rooted in a personal commitment made during her early support for Obi, which initially influenced her decision to join the ADC before her latest political shift.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she said.

Yesufu further disclosed that her new political home is not merely symbolic, as she is now formally entering the contest for the FCT senatorial seat.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.

She noted that she had concluded all formal obligations with the ADC, describing her departure as orderly and expressing appreciation for her time within the party.

“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition. I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” she wrote.

Yesufu said she served in several capacities within the ADC, including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary, and described the experience as rewarding.

“The experience has been invaluable, and I thank everyone for their support and cooperation,” she added.

Aisha Yesufu rose to national prominence as a co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement and later became one of the most visible supporters of Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election, where she helped mobilise youth-driven political participation under the “Obidient” movement.

Her latest move is expected to further reshape opposition dynamics in the FCT ahead of the next general elections, as political alignments continue to shift within emerging parties.
