Ted Turner, the outspoken media entrepreneur who transformed global broadcasting with the launch of the first 24-hour news network, has died at the age of 87.
A family spokesperson confirmed that Turner passed away on Wednesday at his residence near Tallahassee, Florida. He had disclosed in 2018 that he was battling Lewy body dementia.
Turner made history in 1980 when he founded CNN, introducing round-the-clock news coverage and reshaping how audiences consumed breaking events.
The network later expanded into CNN Headline News and CNN International, becoming a major player during pivotal global moments such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Tiananmen Square crackdown and the 1991 Gulf War.
Tributes poured in following news of his death, with CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson describing him as “the presiding spirit of CNN” who was “intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch.”
Beyond news, Turner built a vast media empire. His ventures included the development of TBS and TNT, as well as the creation of Turner Classic Movies after acquiring the film library of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
He also launched Cartoon Network following the purchase of Hanna-Barbera. In 1996, Turner Broadcasting merged with Time Warner, marking a significant shift in the global media landscape.
Turner’s influence extended into sports. He owned the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks, using his cable platforms to give the Braves nationwide visibility. He was also an accomplished yachtsman, leading his boat Courageous to victory in the 1977 America’s Cup.
In later years, Turner became known for his philanthropy and environmental advocacy. He pledged $1 billion to the United Nations and supported initiatives aimed at reducing global conflict and preserving natural ecosystems. His conservation efforts made him one of the largest private landowners in the United States.
Turner was married three times, including to actress Jane Fonda. He is survived by five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
