Hisbah Command

The Hisbah Command in Bauchi State has arrested seven persons in Azare, Katagum Local Government Area, over an alleged wife-swapping practice described by authorities as immoral and contrary to Islamic teachings.

The suspects, reportedly linked to a group identified as Wuddadu, were accused of secretly exchanging their wives for sexual relationships among themselves.

Speaking with journalists, the Katagum Zonal Commander of the Hisbah Command, Ridwan Muhammad Khairan, said the arrests followed complaints from residents and some concerned members of the association.

According to him, preliminary investigations showed that the suspects deliberately organised the practice and attempted to defend it with claims of spiritual justification.

“There is no basis for such actions in Islam. Marriage must follow laid-down principles, and what they engaged in is against Sharia and amounts to adultery,” he said.

Khairan disclosed that the suspects were apprehended by the command’s enforcement unit, Operation Ko Ba Kobo, after intelligence reports exposed the alleged activities.

He warned that the command would continue to act against practices considered harmful to religious and moral values in the state.

“We will not tolerate actions that contradict societal and religious standards. Residents should remain vigilant and report suspicious activities,” he added.

Reacting to the incident, the leader of the Wuddadu group, Sagir Bashir, distanced the association from the conduct, insisting that only a few members were involved.

Bashir said the group had tried repeatedly over the past year to stop the alleged behaviour through counselling and warnings, but the individuals allegedly continued in secret.

According to him, the decision to involve the Hisbah Command was taken to protect the image and moral standing of the community.

He further revealed that the suspects had previously been cautioned over a similar incident but allegedly failed to honour promises to desist.

The arrests have stirred reactions within the area, with religious leaders and residents calling for stricter adherence to moral and family values.
