The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured the conviction of a motorist accused of abducting and assaulting one of its personnel during a patrol operation along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja.
The incident, according to the Corps, occurred on April 30, 2026, during a special patrol exercise conducted by officials of the RS 7.19 Dutse Alhaji Unit Command near Gegu Filling Station.
In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer at the FRSC headquarters in Abuja, Osondu Ohaeri, the agency said the patrol team had stopped a Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number YAB 931 AE for routine traffic enforcement when the situation turned violent.
The Corps stated that the driver allegedly resisted lawful directives, assaulted an FRSC marshal and unlawfully abducted the officer while he was carrying out official duties.
According to the statement, the situation was brought under control through the swift intervention of the patrol team and police officers attached to the operation.
The suspect was immediately arrested and taken to the FCDA Police Station in Kubwa for investigation, while the vehicle involved was impounded.
Following prosecution, the offender was arraigned before a competent court and convicted.
The court ordered the convict to either pay a fine of N72,000 or serve a three-month prison term.
In addition, the court awarded N50,000 compensation to the assaulted FRSC personnel.
Reacting to the development, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, commended the professionalism and restraint displayed by the patrol team despite the attack.
He described assaults on traffic enforcement personnel as an attack on public safety and the rule of law.
“Attacks on traffic enforcement personnel constitute a direct assault on public safety and the rule of law,” the Corps Marshal said.
He reiterated the commitment of the Corps to enforcing traffic regulations with civility and respect for human rights, while warning motorists against obstructing or attacking FRSC personnel and other law enforcement officers performing lawful duties.
Mohammed also urged Nigerians to cooperate with traffic and security agencies, stressing that compliance with road safety regulations remained critical to protecting lives and ensuring safer roads across the country.
The FRSC further assured the public that it would continue to collaborate with security agencies and the judiciary to ensure offenders who violate traffic laws or assault public officers are brought to justice.
