Abdulaziz Ganduje, son of former Kano State governor and immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abdulaziz, who is associated with the Kwankwasiyya political movement loyal to former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also obtained the NDC nomination form to contest for the Dawakin Tofa/Tofa/Rimin Gado federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives.
His move was revealed in a viral video circulating online, where he was seen introducing himself to Kwankwaso and declaring his intention to run for the National Assembly under the NDC platform.
The development adds another twist to Kano’s already tense political landscape, especially given the long-running rivalry between Kwankwaso and Abdullahi Ganduje, who were once close political allies before their relationship collapsed after Ganduje succeeded Kwankwaso as governor in 2015.
The federal constituency seat Abdulaziz is seeking is currently occupied by Tijjani Jobe of the APC.
Jobe was initially elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) before defecting to the APC in January. He has since secured the ruling party’s ticket to seek re-election in 2027.
Political observers say Abdulaziz Ganduje’s defection could reshape political alignments in parts of Kano Central, especially within the Kwankwasiyya movement, which remains influential across the state.
The latest development also comes amid increasing political realignments in Kano as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 polls.
