The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has inaugurated a Service Innovation Committee as part of efforts to strengthen research and development, accelerate digital transformation, and improve service delivery across the agency.

The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja in line with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation aimed at promoting innovation within government institutions.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as a key pillar of the agency’s current administration and a critical tool for enhancing performance in a scientific organisation.

He explained that innovation goes beyond scientific discoveries and involves translating research findings and inventions into practical solutions that create value for society.

According to Anosike, NiMet has embarked on a series of transformative initiatives since he assumed office, including the modernisation of operations, improved weather and climate services, stronger stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity development, expanded institutional partnerships, and wider deployment of digital technologies.

The NiMet chief said the reforms have improved organisational efficiency and created an environment that encourages creativity and continuous improvement.

“The establishment of this Committee therefore formalizes our commitment to innovation and continuous improvement,” he said.

Anosike noted that the committee would play a strategic role in advancing the agency’s mandate by identifying innovative climate-smart solutions, supporting research and development activities, and providing evidence-based recommendations to management.

He added that the committee would also advise the agency on innovation-related matters and monitor the implementation of innovation initiatives across various departments.

According to him, strengthening innovation within NiMet is essential to ensuring the agency remains responsive to emerging environmental challenges, technological advancements, and the growing demand for reliable weather and climate information.

The Director-General expressed confidence that the committee would serve as a catalyst for scientific breakthroughs and help position the agency as a leading institution in meteorological and climate services.

The inauguration, he said, underscores NiMet’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, and innovation while supporting national efforts to build a more efficient and technology-driven public service.

Stakeholders at the event noted that the initiative is expected to enhance operational effectiveness and contribute to better decision-making through the integration of research, innovation, and digital tools into the agency’s core activities.
