Social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil, popularly known as Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kano metropolis.

Khalil was reportedly found in a pool of blood at his home on Wednesday, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Amnesty International condemned the killing, describing it as a brutal attack on the commentator.

The rights organisation said Khalil was “brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his killers”.

It called on the Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible face justice.

Amnesty also expressed concern over threats and intimidation against outspoken Nigerians as the country approaches the 2027 elections.

“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” the organisation said.

It added that it had continued to receive reports of politically related threats to life and intimidation.

The organisation said the government needed to do more to prevent killings and other serious human rights violations.

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has directed security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for Khalil’s death.

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, said Yusuf described the incident as “shocking and unacceptable”.

Yusuf ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The governor also expressed condolences to Khalil’s family, friends and associates.

He appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

Yusuf further directed the state commands of the Department of State Services and Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the killing.

He assured residents that his administration would continue working with security agencies to protect lives and property across the state.

The governor warned that no individual or group would be allowed to resort to self-help.

The circumstances surrounding Khalil’s death remained unclear as of the time of filing the report.
