British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to resign by Monday, following political pressure triggered by Andy Burnham’s return to Westminster in the Makerfield by-election.
Citing sources within the Labour Party, The British Observer reported that the Prime Minister is now seriously considering stepping down after a series of internal discussions over his leadership.
According to the report, Starmer’s position has been the subject of intense consultations involving cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders and party financiers.
“The Prime Minister is understood to have reached the conclusion that his position is no longer tenable after conversations in recent days with cabinet ministers, Downing Street advisers, trade union leaders, and party donors,” the report stated.
The newspaper also noted that although Starmer is currently spending the weekend at Chequers in discussions with his wife, Victoria, a final decision is expected imminently.
“Although Starmer is spending the weekend talking his future over with his wife at Chequers before making a final decision, senior Labour figures believe a ‘clear statement’ could come as early as Monday,” it added.
The speculation comes at a time of growing discontent within the Labour Party, as concerns rise over declining popularity and recent electoral setbacks despite its 2024 general election victory over the Conservative Party.
Starmer’s leadership, once strengthened by that landslide win, has since faced increasing scrutiny as the party struggles to maintain momentum and consolidate public support.
The Makerfield by-election, which brought Andy Burnham back into Westminster, has further intensified debate within Labour circles about the party’s direction and leadership stability.
If confirmed, Starmer’s resignation would add to a period of political volatility in the United Kingdom, where leadership changes have become more frequent over the past decade amid shifting voter sentiment and internal party tensions.
