The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three men, including a former security guard, in connection with the killing of former Ogun State Television (OGTV) broadcaster, Olakitan Oyesiku, and her security guard, Pelumi Adetayo.
Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, disclosed the breakthrough on Thursday while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
According to him, the arrests were made following days of intelligence-driven investigation, technical tracking and forensic analysis carried out by detectives handling the case.
Oyesiku and Adetayo were discovered dead at the retired broadcaster’s residence in the Owode-Egba area of Ogun State on June 21. Her Lexus RX 330 SUV was also missing from the compound, raising suspicion that the attackers fled with the vehicle after the killings.
Ojajuni said police received a distress report at about 4 p.m. on the day of the incident regarding unusual activities at the residence.
He explained that officers who responded to the scene found signs of forced entry, while the security post within the compound was locked.
A search of the premises led to the discovery of Adetayo’s body inside the security house, while Oyesiku was found dead in the living room of the main building.
“The crime scene was scientifically processed. Preliminary investigation further revealed that a Lexus RX 330 vehicle belonging to the deceased was missing from the compound, raising suspicion of robbery and murder,” the police commissioner said.
He disclosed that the stolen vehicle was recovered the following day through intelligence-led operations and technical tracking.
Investigators also recovered a handwritten note believed to have been left behind by the perpetrators. According to the commissioner, forensic examination of the document generated vital clues that helped detectives identify and track down the suspects.
“Although the ignition key had been removed and the registration number plates detached from the vehicle, detectives recovered the vehicle’s registration plate concealed underneath one of the seats, which enabled investigators to positively identify and confirm the vehicle as the property of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku,” Ojajuni stated.
The police boss identified the principal suspect as 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, who was arrested on June 24 at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he had reportedly been working as a labourer.
Further operations led to the arrest of Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27, and Sobu Obafunsho, 36.
Ojajuni said Philip confessed during interrogation and admitted recruiting the two other suspects to carry out the attack.
“During interrogation, Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip made a confessional statement, admitting his involvement in the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku. He further disclosed that he had recruited Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola and Sobu Obafunsho to participate in the crime,” he said.
According to the commissioner, the suspect claimed he orchestrated the attack over grievances he harboured from the period he worked as a security guard for the deceased.
“The suspect stated that the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku was intended to ‘teach her a lesson’,” Ojajuni added.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly struck on June 20, first overpowering Adetayo before using him to gain access to the residence.
“According to the statement, they first overpowered the security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, and used him to gain access to the residence. Upon gaining entry, they attacked Madam Olakitan Oyesiku and subsequently murdered the security guard,” the commissioner said.
After the killings, the suspects reportedly escaped with Oyesiku’s vehicle, which was later recovered in the Onikolobo area of Ogun State.
The police also recovered several items believed to be connected to the crime, including a broken hammer, a cutlass, a wooden plank and a black pen.
Ojajuni said investigations were continuing despite the confessional statements and recovery of exhibits, stressing that all suspects remained entitled to fair hearing and due process under the law.
He assured residents that the command would pursue the case to its conclusion and ensure justice for the slain broadcaster and her security guard.
