TMV Commends FG Over Payment of Lecturers’ Eight-month Allowance Backlog

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has commended the Federal Government for releasing funds to clear eight months of lecturers’ accumulated allowances.

The group said the payment covered the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for eligible academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

In a statement, its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, described the payment as a sign of the government’s commitment to its agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

According to the group, the payment covers allowances owed from January to August 2026.

It said the disbursement followed the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and would cover federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

TMV said the payment could help promote stability across the tertiary education sector.

It recalled that disputes over salaries, allowances and other conditions of service had repeatedly triggered tensions between ASUU and successive federal administrations.

The group said the latest payment could help reduce the conditions that have contributed to industrial disputes in the sector.

“We commend the move by the Federal Government as it will guarantee stability in the academic calendar of the tertiary institutions,” the statement said.

TMV also praised the Tinubu administration over what it described as regular payment of salaries and allowances to tertiary institution workers.

It further welcomed the government’s assurances on retirement benefits for academic and non-academic retirees.

The group said these measures would improve confidence among workers and support uninterrupted academic activities.

It urged the Federal Government to sustain its engagement with education unions and address outstanding issues affecting tertiary institutions.
