Pro-Tinubu Group Commends Conviction of Boko Haram Terrorists

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has said the recent conviction of Boko Haram members and the ongoing trial of hundreds of suspects point to a stronger resolve by the Federal Government to tackle insecurity.

In a statement signed by its chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the development signals a renewed effort to ensure justice for victims of insurgency.

The group noted that more than 10 suspects had already been convicted out of over 500 currently standing trial in Abuja, describing the process as a shift from years of delay.

“With the trial and subsequent conviction of more than 10 Boko Haram terrorists out of over 500 standing trial in Abuja, it is clear that a new vigour has been injected in the prosecution process,” the statement said.

It observed that many of the cases had previously stalled for between five and seven years without conclusion, adding that the current phased trial would help speed up justice.

The group also pointed to recent rulings by James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, who sentenced four Boko Haram members to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to terrorism charges.

In addition, fourteen other suspects were convicted and handed prison terms ranging from 20 to 25 years on various counts.

TMV said the outcomes show a deliberate move by the government of Bola Tinubu to strengthen the handling of terrorism-related cases and rebuild public confidence in the justice system.

“We consider the convictions as a display of the federal government’s commitment to promptly prosecuting terrorism-related cases,” the group said.

It added that the decision by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation to assign multiple judges to the trials had helped accelerate proceedings.

According to the group, the empanelment of 10 judges to handle the cases was aimed at ensuring quicker resolution and proper punishment for those found guilty.

TMV also commended members of the judiciary for dedicating time to the cases, noting that some judges gave up part of their Easter vacation to focus on the trials.

The group expressed hope that the pace would be sustained as the country continues efforts to curb insurgency and bring perpetrators to justice.
