AAU Lecturer Dies in Hotel After Encounter With Sex Worker

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

The incident occurred on October 5 at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.

Uwuigbe reportedly checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

A source said the lecturer later asked the woman to leave the room to purchase an item. She returned shortly afterwards and found him unresponsive on the bed.

The incident was reported to the police at about 8 p.m. the same day.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the development and said it had arrested three people in connection with the case.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the deceased had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman before his death.

She added that the hotel owner, manager and the woman remained in police custody as investigators worked to establish what happened.

The police have deposited the lecturer’s remains at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary pending further investigation.

Meanwhile, AAU confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university.

The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the woman involved was not a student of the university.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” Aladenika said.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death, including the events leading up to his collapse.
