The death toll from a bandit attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State has sparked controversy, with police confirming 10 deaths while residents insist that 26 bodies have been recovered.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, according to the Taraba State Police Command.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Victor Mshelizah, confirmed the incident, attributing it to suspected bandits. However, he did not provide further details about the circumstances of the attack.
Residents have disputed the police casualty figure, maintaining that the number of people killed stands at 26.
Local sources said the attackers, suspected to have crossed from neighbouring Plateau State, stormed Binnari unexpectedly and unleashed violence on the community.
The assailants reportedly killed residents, set houses ablaze and destroyed foodstuffs said to be worth millions of naira.
The violence forced several residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighbouring communities. Some people were also reportedly missing after the attack, raising concerns about the full extent of the casualties.
Residents further alleged that they made distress calls during the assault, but security personnel arrived too late to prevent the killings and destruction.
The conflicting casualty figures have left residents demanding clarification on the actual number of victims. While the police put the death toll at 10, the community maintains that 26 bodies have been recovered.
The attack has also renewed concerns over insecurity in Karim Lamido and neighbouring areas. Residents have called on the Taraba State Government and relevant security agencies to take urgent steps to protect lives and property.
They urged security authorities to strengthen their presence in vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.
As of the time of this report, the discrepancy between the police figure and the community’s account remains unresolved.
