Harry Kane heads the betting for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but a late surge in support for Kylian Mbappe has thrown the race open ahead of Monday’s ceremony in London.
England captain Kane remains the bookmakers’ favourite at odds of 4-7. However, punters have backed Real Madrid forward Mbappe heavily, forcing his odds down from 14-1 to as short as 2-1.
Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal completes the leading trio, although his chances have weakened in recent weeks. The 19-year-old, who once led the betting, now attracts odds of around 13-2.
The winner will emerge from a 30-player shortlist at the ceremony scheduled for the London Palladium on Monday evening. Football fans can also watch the event through DAZN’s streaming platform.
Kane hopes to become only the fifth Englishman to win the prestigious award in its 70-year history. Previous English winners include Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, who won twice, and Michael Owen.
The Bayern Munich striker has built a strong case through his remarkable goalscoring record. He scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country from the start of last season through the end of the World Cup.
His goals helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title comfortably. However, the German champions fell in the Champions League semi-finals, while England also exited the World Cup at that stage.
Those setbacks could weaken Kane’s claim, as voters often favour players who combine individual brilliance with major team honours.
An international jury of 100 journalists determines the men’s award. Voting closed on September 28, although betting trends have continued to shift as the ceremony approaches.
Mbappe has attracted significant support despite failing to win a trophy with Real Madrid or France during the 2025-26 season.
The French forward, however, boasts impressive individual achievements. He finished as La Liga’s leading scorer and topped the Champions League scoring chart last season.
He also scored 10 goals at the World Cup, becoming the first player to claim the tournament’s Golden Boot more than once.
Mbappe has long featured among the leading contenders but has yet to improve on his third-place finish in 2023. His latest surge in betting suggests punters believe this could be his breakthrough year.
Yamal, meanwhile, has the strongest argument among the leading contenders in terms of team honours. The Barcelona winger won La Liga and played a prominent role in Spain’s World Cup triumph.
However, his individual numbers have come under scrutiny. He scored 24 goals in 45 appearances for Barcelona last season but managed only one goal at the World Cup.
Spain teammate Rodri won the tournament’s Player of the Tournament award, while Pau Cubarsi collected the Young Player honour.
Despite the recent drift in his odds, Yamal remains one of football’s most exciting young talents. His performances and growing global profile could still make him a serious contender.
The award has also become less predictable since Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the contest for nearly two decades.
Since 2022, Karim Benzema, Messi, Rodri and Ousmane Dembele have shared the honour, reflecting a wider spread of individual excellence across European football.
The 2026 ceremony begins at 8pm GMT on Monday, October 26, at the London Palladium. Organisers moved the event from its usual home in Paris to honour Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956.
Messi, who holds the record with eight Ballon d’Or titles, also appears on this year’s 30-man shortlist, although bookmakers place him well behind the leading contenders.
With Kane holding the narrow advantage and Mbappe attracting late support, Monday’s announcement will settle a contest shaped by goalscoring records, team success and individual brilliance.
