EFCC Detains TikToker Over False Kidnap Claim

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a TikTok user, Udoma David Ekeh, over allegations of spreading false information about the agency and its operations.
The commission said the suspect circulated a claim in December 2025 alleging that operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate were kidnapped by bandits and that ransom was demanded for their release.
Spokesperson of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, described the claim as entirely fabricated and misleading.
“All his claims are fabricated, together with the use of his TikTok account to incite and misinform the public about the Commission’s relentless efforts in tackling the menace of internet fraud,” Oyewale said.
According to the agency, the viral claim sparked concern at the time, raising questions about the safety of its personnel and the credibility of information circulating on social media.
The EFCC maintained that no such incident occurred and warned against the spread of unverified reports capable of causing panic.
Further investigations, the commission said, linked the suspect to alleged internet fraud activities.
It alleged that Ekeh operated a Facebook account where he impersonated a foreign national identified as “Garg Carta” as part of a romance scam.
The anti-graft agency said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The arrest comes amid rising concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to spread false information, particularly claims involving security agencies, which authorities say could erode public trust and undermine ongoing efforts to combat crime.
