NiMet Alerts Lagos, FCT, Others to Flooding Risk as Storms Loom

JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a late-night weather alert warning of thunderstorms, strong winds and possible flooding across several parts of the country, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.

The advisory, released on Wednesday evening listed states expected to be affected to include Kaduna, the FCT, Niger, Kogi, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta.

According to NiMet, the weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, with risks of flash flooding in some locations.

“Thunderstorms with strong winds and moderate to heavy rainfall are expected, with possible localized flash flooding, lightning and reduced visibility,” the agency stated.

The forecast raised concerns over road safety and movement, as heavy downpours could make roads slippery and reduce visibility for motorists.

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors where possible during the storms.

NiMet also warned against staying in open spaces or near tall trees due to the risk of lightning strikes and falling branches.

It urged households to unplug electrical appliances to guard against power surges, while loose outdoor items should be secured to prevent damage from strong winds.

The agency further advised the public to avoid flood-prone areas, noting that sudden accumulation of water could pose danger in low-lying communities.

“Residents should remain alert, stay indoors where possible, and avoid flood-prone and open areas during the storm,” the agency added.

NiMet encouraged the public to monitor its official channels for updates as the situation develops.
