Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has emerged as the consensus candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District following the withdrawal of eight aspirants from the race.

The development followed a reconciliation meeting held in Abuja, where stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) resolved lingering disagreements surrounding the party’s senatorial ticket for the district.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson to Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, Sunusi Dawakin, the meeting was convened as part of efforts to restore unity within the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The statement said discussions at the meeting centred on strengthening cohesion among party leaders and avoiding divisions that could weaken the APC’s chances in Kano Central.

Following deliberations, eight aspirants reportedly agreed to step down and endorse Shekarau as the party’s consensus candidate for the senatorial seat.

Governor Yusuf commended the aspirants for embracing dialogue and putting the collective interest of the party above personal ambition.

He described their decision as a demonstration of political maturity, sacrifice and commitment to democratic principles.

The governor also reiterated his administration’s support for peaceful consultations and consensus-building as tools for political stability and development.

One of the stakeholders at the meeting, Usman Bala, said the aspirants unanimously backed the reconciliation effort initiated by the governor.

He described the intervention as timely and necessary for unity within the APC in Kano State.

In his remarks, Shekarau expressed appreciation to Governor Yusuf for facilitating reconciliation among party stakeholders and thanked the aspirants who stepped down in support of his candidacy.

The former governor pledged to work with party members and supporters to strengthen the APC’s position in Kano Central and across the state.

The emergence of Shekarau as consensus candidate is expected to reshape political alignments within Kano APC as preparations gradually begin ahead of future elections.
