The Kano State Censorship Board has imposed a one-year suspension on two Kannywood actors, Amina Uba Hassan and Adam Garba, following their alleged involvement in a video the agency described as inconsistent with the moral and cultural standards of the state.
The decision, announced in a statement on Sunday by the Board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, said the disciplinary action became necessary after a controversial clip featuring the actors circulated widely on social media, drawing public backlash across Kano State.
According to the board, the content of the video was deemed inappropriate and capable of undermining the ethical values the state’s film regulatory framework is designed to protect. The suspension effectively bars both actors from participating in any film production or related activities within Kano State for the duration of the ban.
The statement further emphasized that the board operates within its legal mandate to regulate the activities of film practitioners in the state, warning that any breach of its directives would attract sanctions under existing regulations.
“The board has the legal authority to suspend any Kannywood practitioner from operating in Kano, and violation of this directive could attract severe penalties under the law,” the statement read in part.
Chairman of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, also weighed in on the development, urging practitioners in the Kannywood industry to exercise restraint and uphold the cultural and moral expectations of the society they represent.
He cautioned that actions capable of damaging the reputation of the industry would not be tolerated, stressing the need for filmmakers, actors, and content creators to remain mindful of their public influence.
El-Mustapha further directed producers and directors within the industry to strictly adhere to the suspension order, warning that any attempt to disregard the directive would amount to a violation of the board’s regulations and could attract further disciplinary measures.
The suspension adds to ongoing conversations around content regulation in the Kannywood industry, which operates under close scrutiny due to Kano State’s strict censorship framework guiding film production and distribution.
While reactions continue to trail the decision, the board maintained that its priority remains the preservation of cultural values and the maintenance of professionalism within the state’s entertainment sector.
