Six days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has formally joined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and declared his intention to contest the Delta Central senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Sunny Areh, in which the senator also confirmed that he would be working with the party’s presidential candidate, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Omo-Agege said his decision followed weeks of consultations with political associates, stakeholders and supporters across the country, adding that the move was driven by what he described as the need for more responsive and people-centred leadership.
“Today, I formally announce my decision to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC),” he said in the statement.
He added that engagements with supporters revealed a common demand for leadership that “listens first, acts with integrity, and delivers results that can be seen and felt in daily life.”
The former Senate Deputy President expressed appreciation to key figures within the NDC, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Senator Moses Cleopas, Peter Obi, and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, for what he described as their commitment to building a credible alternative political platform.
According to him, the NDC represents inclusion, accountability and grassroots participation, and offers a stronger platform to advance the interests of Delta Central and Delta State.
“The NDC represents that kind of leadership. It is a party built on the principles of inclusion, accountability, grassroots participation, and true federalism,” he said.
Omo-Agege stated clearly that his return to the Senate was motivated by renewed calls from his constituents, insisting that he could not ignore the demand for stronger representation.
“On this platform, I will contest for the Delta Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections,” he declared.
He argued that despite Delta State’s economic importance as a major oil and gas producer, the state has continued to suffer from poor infrastructure, unemployment and underdevelopment.
He lamented what he described as a widening gap between federal allocations and living conditions in the state, saying communities were still plagued by collapsed roads, failing health centres and inadequate educational facilities.
“Right now, too much of Delta’s wealth sits in CBN accounts while our people suffer from bad roads, collapsed hospitals, and abandoned communities,” he said.
The senator described the situation as a failure of leadership and urged a political reset anchored on accountability and service delivery.
Omo-Agege also pledged to strengthen the NDC from the grassroots, saying he would help build a competitive structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said the party would focus on mobilising voters, registering new members and presenting credible candidates across all levels of government.
The former APC chieftain, who once held a prominent role in the Senate, insisted he was returning to active frontline politics rather than playing a secondary role.
“I will not go to Abuja to warm the bench. I am going to fight for Delta Central,” he said, adding that he would prioritise federal project allocation, accountability and job creation if elected.
He further called for unity among the three senatorial districts in Delta State, arguing that a united front would strengthen the state’s bargaining power at the federal level.
Omo-Agege also appealed to youths, women, traditional rulers and voters to actively participate in the electoral process ahead of 2027, describing the Permanent Voter’s Card as the most powerful tool for political change.
He said the 2027 elections would mark a turning point for Delta State and Nigeria, stressing that the country must move away from “excuses and empty promises” toward accountable governance.
“The work starts now. The time is now. The people are ready,” he added.
