China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in sports development, using martial arts and cultural exchanges as platforms to broaden bilateral relations and foster closer ties between their peoples.
The renewed commitment was expressed in Abuja on Tuesday at the Passion of Chinese Wushu: Cultural Heritage Chinese Wushu Premium Exhibition, organised by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria.
The event attracted sports administrators, government officials, diplomats, students and cultural enthusiasts, highlighting the growing role of sports diplomacy in relations between both countries.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, said Nigeria was eager to expand collaboration with China in critical areas of sports administration, coaching, sports science, infrastructure management, anti-doping programmes and youth development.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Legal, Strategy and Administration, Musa Ahmadu, Dikko noted that sports and culture remain powerful instruments for strengthening international relations.
According to him, cooperation between Nigeria and China should not be measured solely by investments, trade and infrastructure projects but also by the connections built through cultural and sporting engagements.
“Sports diplomacy offers both Nigeria and China a powerful platform to build deeper connections. Sports speaks a universal language, crossing borders, bridging differences and bringing people together in ways formal diplomacy sometimes cannot,” he said.
The NSC chairman praised Chinese institutions for supporting capacity-building initiatives in Nigeria’s sports sector, revealing that two technical officials of the commission recently participated in a training programme in China organised by the Academy for International Business Officials.
He said China’s experience in sports development and Nigeria’s youthful population present opportunities for collaboration in athlete development, sports technology, research and the promotion of traditional sports.
Dikko said the commission remained open to deeper engagement with the Chinese Embassy, the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, Beijing Sport University and other relevant institutions.
He expressed confidence that stronger cooperation in sports and culture would further consolidate the friendship between both countries.

The exhibition focused on Wushu, a traditional Chinese martial art that combines physical fitness, discipline and cultural values.
Speaking at the event, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and Director of the China Cultural Center, Yang Jianxing, described Wushu as an important symbol of Chinese civilisation and heritage.
“Wushu is not merely a sport; it is a cultural language and a spiritual heritage. It embodies the Chinese nation’s enduring spirit of self-improvement and reflects values such as respect, virtue, harmony and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
Yang explained that the philosophy behind Wushu promotes peace, respect and self-discipline, noting that martial arts should be seen as a tool for harmony rather than conflict.
He said the exhibition offered Nigerians a rare opportunity to experience Chinese martial arts through lectures, demonstrations and interactive sessions conducted by renowned Wushu expert, Professor Wu Dong, and a delegation from Beijing Sport University.
According to him, the programme coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria and the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
He noted that bilateral cooperation has expanded steadily over the years in sectors ranging from trade and infrastructure to education and culture.
Yang added that cultural initiatives such as the Wushu exhibition help strengthen mutual understanding and reinforce the friendship between citizens of both nations.
Also speaking, Director of Programmes at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Mrs Abiodun Ogidan, described the event as a practical example of cultural diplomacy at work.
She said the exhibition served not only as a showcase of Chinese martial arts but also as a platform for intercultural dialogue and stronger Nigeria-China relations.
Ogidan highlighted FRCN’s longstanding collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, noting that the broadcaster regularly promotes Chinese language, culture, tourism, education and sports through its nationwide network.
“We broadcast on a weekly basis the Mandarin language, we teach Mandarin online, we talk about Chinese culture, education, sports, tourism and the relationship between China and Nigeria,” she said.
She reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to sustaining the partnership, saying continued collaboration would further deepen cultural exchange, educational engagement and people-to-people connections between the two countries.
The exhibition underscored the growing role of sports and cultural diplomacy in advancing China-Nigeria relations, with stakeholders from both countries expressing optimism that cooperation would continue to expand in the years ahead.
