Residents of Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State were reportedly thrown into panic on Wednesday following an alleged incursion by more than 200 officers of the Cameroonian Armed Forces into Nigerian territory.
The claim was made in a post on X by user Ozor Ndi Ozor, who alleged that the armed foreign troops entered the border community without following established international boundary protocols.
According to the post, the officers, dressed in full military uniform and reportedly carrying arms, crossed into the community, triggering fears among residents over their safety and raising concerns about security along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.
The reported development caused tension in the area as community members questioned the circumstances surrounding the presence of the foreign military personnel within Nigerian territory.
The post further alleged that a former Vice Chairman of Boki Local Government Area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.
Mbia was said to have engaged the Cameroonian officers shortly after arriving at the scene and worked to calm frayed nerves within the community.
According to the account, his intervention helped to de-escalate tensions and reassure residents amid fears that the incident could trigger a diplomatic or security confrontation.
During the engagement, Mbia reportedly cautioned the officers against future unauthorised entry into Nigerian territory, stressing the need to respect international boundary regulations and the sovereignty of border communities.
The X user quoted him as warning that the presence of armed foreign military personnel on Nigerian soil without due authorisation was unacceptable and could have serious security implications.
The situation was later brought under control, according to the report, while calls emerged for tighter border surveillance and a review of security arrangements along the international boundary.
The alleged incursion has renewed concerns about the porous nature of sections of the Nigeria-Cameroon border and the challenges faced by communities located in frontier areas.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Nigerian military, the Cross River State Government, or Cameroonian authorities confirming or denying the reported incident.
Observers say clarification from relevant authorities will be crucial in determining the circumstances surrounding the alleged border breach and preventing future occurrences.
