Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2027 general election, Adewole Adebayo, has condemned the proposed deregistration of some political parties, describing the move as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
Adebayo, in a statement posted on his X handle, said there was no constitutional, legal or moral basis for suppressing alternative political platforms through government action backed by court orders.
The SDP flag bearer expressed concern that the development was coming just days after Nigerians celebrated Democracy Day, during which leaders reaffirmed their commitment to democratic ideals and inclusive governance.
Although the SDP is not among the parties reportedly affected, Adebayo said remaining silent in the face of injustice would amount to abandoning the principles of democracy.
He called on Nigerians and defenders of democracy to stand with the affected parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Action Alliance, Action People’s Party, Accord Party and Zenith Labour Party.
According to him, Nigeria’s diverse social, cultural, religious and economic realities require multiple political platforms to enable citizens freely pursue their political aspirations.
He pledged support for the affected parties in their quest for justice and restoration through lawful means, insisting that democratic participation should never be restricted.
Adebayo also advocated constitutional reforms to strip the Independent National Electoral Commission of the powers to register or deregister political parties, limiting the electoral body’s role to conducting free, fair and credible elections.
He proposed a system that would allow political associations to field candidates upon payment of statutory deposits, with parties failing to secure a minimum percentage of votes forfeiting such deposits.
The SDP chieftain warned against policies capable of heightening political tension, urging leaders to focus on strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.
He further offered to personally assist the affected parties in challenging the decision through all legitimate constitutional channels, maintaining that no democratic platform should be arbitrarily denied participation in Nigeria’s political process.
