NiMet Secures ISO Certification for Weather Services at Three Airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports, strengthening Nigeria’s compliance with international aviation safety and quality standards.

The certification followed a third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc. Canada between July 20 and 23, 2026, during which NiMet’s products and services provided to the aviation industry at the three airports were assessed against the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The development is part of efforts to implement the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and improve Nigeria’s standing with international aviation and meteorological bodies.

NiMet said the audit found its quality management system and aeronautical meteorological services at the airports to be in conformity with the requirements of ISO 9001:2015.

The agency’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the certification as a significant achievement for the agency, particularly as it was the first time that its aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports had undergone the ISO certification audit.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” Anosike said.

He, however, stressed that the certification was not the end of the process, noting that the agency remained focused on improving its standards across all operational locations.

“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he said.

In a letter to Anosike dated July 26, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, confirmed that the audit objectives had been achieved.

“The audit objectives for the surveillance audit were achieved. A systematic process audit was performed with emphasis on risks and objectives per ISO 9001:2015,” Strohmeier said.

Following the audit, Certech issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conformed to ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The latest certification brings to eight the number of Nigerian international airports where NiMet has secured or maintained ISO 9001:2015 certification for its aviation meteorological services.

The airports include Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport; Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri; and Osubi Airport.

NiMet had earlier been successfully recertified under the ISO 9001:2015 standard at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Aminu Kano International Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Enugu International Airport and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits required to ensure continued compliance before the next recertification exercise in 2029.

The agency said the certification underscored its efforts to strengthen the reliability and quality of meteorological information supplied to airlines and other aviation stakeholders.

Accurate and timely weather information is critical to flight planning and operations, including decisions on take-off and landing, route selection and the management of weather-related risks.

The achievement therefore provides another indication of NiMet’s efforts to align its aviation meteorological operations with internationally recognised quality management requirements while supporting safer and more efficient air transport in Nigeria.
