US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 payment to every American adult if Republicans retain control of Congress in November.
Trump made the pledge on Wednesday at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, as Democrats gain ground in opinion polls ahead of the election.
“If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend,” he told supporters.
Trump did not explain how the government would finance the proposed payment. The scheme could cost more than $1 trillion if all eligible adults received the money.
He simply argued that the United States was generating substantial revenue.
The president also urged Republicans to vote as though he himself would appear on the ballot.
“I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot,” Trump told the gathering.
Trump’s appeal comes as his approval ratings remain in the low 30s. Voters have also expressed growing concern over high prices and his war with Iran.
Decision Desk HQ projects Democrats to win the House by 230 seats to 205. It also forecasts a 51-49 Democratic majority in the Senate.
Trump, however, dismissed the political headwinds and sought to rally Republicans around his record and policies.
He strongly defended the war in Iran and predicted that oil prices would fall once the conflict ends.
“Oil will be going down as soon as we win the war with Iran, which is taking place right now,” Trump said.
He also warned that a Democratic victory could push the United States towards communism.
“It’s going to be a communist country if they win,” he told supporters.
Trump is expected to return for the convention’s finale on Thursday after Vice President JD Vance delivers the keynote address.
Cabinet officials, congressional leaders and candidates in closely contested House and Senate races are also scheduled to speak.
The Republican strategy centres on Trump’s ability to mobilise his supporters even though he is not personally contesting the November election.
Party leaders must also avoid further alienating independent voters who have become dissatisfied with his presidency.
Inside the American Airlines Center, however, the gathering carried little sign of concern about the electoral outlook.
Republicans highlighted tax cuts, immigration enforcement, manufacturing growth and lower prescription drug prices during the event.
More than 100 House members and candidates were expected to attend the two-day gathering, with more than 50 speakers and presentations planned each night.
The convention marks the first Republican national gathering organised specifically around a midterm election.
No candidates are being nominated, and organisers have scheduled no formal party business.
Instead, the event has taken the form of a two-night rally designed to promote Trump’s record and strengthen Republican candidates ahead of the November 3 election.
