A police officer, identified as Corporal Blessing Omene, has died after a moving truck struck and crushed him while he was on duty in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 30, along Glory Land Drive on the East-West Road axis of the state capital.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Ajao Saka Adewale, confirmed the incident in a post on the Bayelsa Police-Media platform. He said the officer served with the Safer Highway Patrol Unit.

According to the police commissioner, officers arrested the truck driver shortly after the incident and commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Adewale described Omene’s death as a painful loss to the command, noting that the officer had reported for duty to protect road users but never returned home.

He said, “I received with deep sorrow the news of the sudden death of F/No. 520061 CPL Blessing Omene of the Safer Highway Patrol, on 30th September, 2026, who was reportedly struck by a truck while on duty along Glory Land Drive, East-West Road.”

The commissioner expressed condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and members of the Safer Highway Patrol Unit.

“On behalf of the Bayelsa State Police Command, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues and the entire Safer Highway Patrol Unit,” Adewale said.

He urged police officers deployed to highways to pay close attention to approaching vehicles and maintain safe positions while carrying out their duties.

“As we remember Blessing, let it be in our minds that this is one sad event that pains the command to the marrow,” he said.

Adewale also directed supervisors to reinforce road safety precautions during operational briefings, stressing that officers must protect themselves while protecting members of the public.

“I urge all officers, particularly those working on highways, to remain alert to approaching traffic, position themselves safely and follow established road safety procedures during operations,” he said.

The police commissioner commended the officers who arrested the truck driver and assured the bereaved family of the command’s support.

“The Command stands with the bereaved family at this difficult time and we pray God Almighty comfort the bereaved family and grant repose to the soul of the departed,” he added.

The police command said investigation would determine the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
