JOEL OLADELE, Abuja

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the governorship election in Anambra State is set for Saturday, November 8, 2025. Additionally, the Commission reiterated its preparedness for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State, scheduled for November 16, 2024.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this announcement during a consultative meeting with political parties held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

“Our commitment to transparency and efficiency remains paramount.

“As of today, we have just 29 days left until the Ondo election, and we are on track to ensure a smooth and credible election process,” Yakubu remarked.

He noted that ten out of thirteen key activities outlined in the election’s Timetable and Schedule have already been successfully completed, including the presentation of the voter register to political parties.

Highlighting the importance of voter engagement, the INEC Chairman announced that the collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) for newly registered voters in Ondo commenced on October 17, 2024, and will continue at ward levels until October 21, 2024.

“I encourage political parties to actively mobilize their registered voters to collect their PVCs,” he urged, pointing out that the names and locations of the 221 collection centers have been made available on the Commission’s website.

On party compliance, Yakubu expressed satisfaction, stating, “All 24,148 polling and collation agents for the Ondo election have been duly uploaded to our portal.” He reassured that identification tags for these agents will be delivered in time for election day.

Regarding the Anambra governorship election, Yakubu indicated that the official notice for the election will be issued on November 13, 2024, complying with legal requirements outlined in the Electoral Act 2022. He advised political parties to synchronize their timetables with INEC’s schedule to facilitate a smoother electoral process.

“By aligning your schedules with ours, we can work together to plan better for the deployment of personnel and resources, which will help prevent missing deadlines,” he urged.

Yakubu also emphasized the need for collaboration among political parties to ensure the success of upcoming elections. “We must focus on voter education and issue-based campaigns to engage the electorate effectively,” he stated, before confirming that more information on voter registration and other election-related updates will be disseminated as the elections approach.

The meeting brought together various political leaders, including Yusuf Dantali, Chairman of IPAC and APM, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje of the APC, Kenneth Udenze from Action Alliance, and other representatives from across the political spectrum.
