NiMet Forecasts Intense Nationwide Heat in March

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast intense heat conditions across the country in March 2026, with daytime temperatures expected to soar as high as 41 degrees Celsius in parts of the North and North Central.

In its March weather outlook issued on Wednesday, the agency said the month would mark Nigeria’s gradual transition from the dry season to the rainy season, particularly in the southern region, even as hot conditions persist nationwide.

According to NiMet, “Daytime temperatures will remain high across the country, ranging from 30°C to 40°C, with peak values of 38°C–41°C expected over parts of the North and North Central.”

The agency warned that warm nights combined with rising humidity levels would heighten thermal discomfort in many areas, including the Federal Capital Territory.

On rainfall, NiMet projected the gradual onset of the rainy season across southern states, with above-normal rainfall expected in some areas.

It stated that “Coastal and inland cities may record rainfall totals exceeding 120 mm,” while central states could experience isolated thunderstorms toward the latter part of the month.

The outlook noted that the Harmattan influence would weaken progressively. Although early-month dust haze over northern Nigeria may reduce visibility, the agency said this condition is expected to decline as atmospheric moisture increases.

NiMet also issued a series of advisories to the public. On heat stress, it urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm, and wear light clothing.

For agriculture, the agency cautioned southern farmers against premature planting based on isolated rainfall, while advising northern farmers to prepare irrigation strategies.

On public health, NiMet called for heightened malaria vigilance in the South and increased meningitis awareness across parts of the North.

It further warned of possible early-month visibility reduction affecting aviation and road transport operations in the North, as well as localized disruptions from thunderstorms later in the month.

Environmentally, the agency highlighted an increased risk of bushfires in dry northern areas and advised proper drainage management in southern cities ahead of the rains.

Summing up the outlook, NiMet said, “March 2026 will be predominantly hot nationwide, with rainfall gradually establishing across southern Nigeria and intermittent storms possible in central regions.”
